The Lower School (grades 3-6) continues to reinforce the important academic and social skills emphasized in the primary (K-2) school and transitions students from mastering reading skills to using those skills in subject areas. Students begin studying six major subject areas: Latin, math, science, classical and christian studies, English studies, and modern studies that will build a foundation in preparation for the Upper School.
Students learn from well-designed materials, high quality content, and teacher-directed lessons. Students are motivated to work and learn because they are led by knowledgeable, enthusiastic teachers and are motivated as they experience the joy of learning. Regular breaks are scheduled for physical exercise, music, drawing, art, and review games. Students in grades 3-6 are carefully prepared for the reading of classic literature and history, and for advanced math and science which begin in the Upper School in grade 7. Along with academic skills students are instructed in incremental study skills, work habits, and organization.
BELOW IS A LIST OF ACTIVITIES THAT OUR 3-6TH GRADE STUDENTS ENJOY:
HLS CLUBS American Heritage Girls, Basketball Club, Knitting Club, Running Club and Volleyball Club
ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS New American Cursive Contest, National Latin Exam, The Scripps Spelling Bee and the National Geographic Bee
All lessons are teacher directed. Students are given ample time to complete classroom assignments, which are carefully monitored so that students learn to do quality written work in a timely fashion.
All material is covered carefully in class. Students who are attentive and work diligently in class should have no more than 45 minutes to 1 hour of homework on school nights and 2–3 hours on Monday/Tuesday. Monday/Tuesday homework involves Latin, math and spelling practice and review for unit tests.
