OPENING SCHOOL CEREMONY ADDRESS

Welcome students, faculty and parents to the 2018-2019 school year at HLS. Highlands Latin School is a classical Christian school. If you don’t already know, you soon will find out that we study subjects like Latin, Greek, mathematics and arithmetic. We read books from Little Bear and Charlotte’s Web to Dante’s Divine Comedy and Cicero. We follow a very careful and deliberate plan to expose our students to the best that was thought, said, spoken and written both in Scripture and the great standing works in literature and history. Within all these subjects a HLS student is guided in the discovery for that which is true, that which is good and that which is beautiful.

As we embark together on a new school year, I would like to contemplate together a foundational truth given to us in Scripture from God, the author of truth.

Are you ready for this? It is the first thing you are going to learn this year!

Each and every one of you is a uniquely crafted and loved child of the most-high God. You have been designed with special qualities in your mind, heart, body and soul that fit you perfectly to mirror God’s nature to the people around you. There is a Latin term for this concept taken from Genesis 1:27 called “Imago Dei”, which means In the Image of God.

This theme was selected to help teach and remind us that human life, your life is important to God. He made you with unique qualities that allow you to learn create and feel, understand and empathize, love and have compassion.

These are special attributes that God has imprinted on His Creation for a distinct purpose-to develop for His glory. You have inherent worth just because you are you! There is nothing that you must do or become in order for this to be true. God loves His special creation and wants people to know Him and mirror His image to others.  We have a desire to know truth, goodness and beauty because God placed that within our being.

David wrote a response to this truth in Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” With painstaking care you have been fearfully and wonderfully made. Designed with complexity and a unique blueprint, God considers you a work of art bearing His special imprint to the world. The education you are receiving at school and home is one way you can grow and develop the special qualities endowed to you to develop for God’s glory.

The Psalmist concludes with a statement of confidence, “I know that full well,” Without a shadow of doubt, David rests and relys on this foundational truth. Classical Christian education builds our understanding of “Imago Dei.” Pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty in your studies will help you grow and deepen your understanding that you are a fearfully and wonderfully made child of the most-high God. Throughout the school year watch for places in your studies where this is illustrated.

Before you stands a brand new school year with possibilities and opportunities to grow, learn and develop the unique nature and abilities that God has given each one of you. Commit to do your very best, remember to try, ask for help, obey your parents and above all know that you are deeply loved by your Creator, your parents, and your teachers.

Parents, thank you for entrusting your students to us. We are so glad both you and your student are at HLS for the 2018-19 school year. We are looking forward to a wonderful year partnering with you in this educational endeavor.
