Mr. Cutrona, one of HLS Upper School’s most beloved teachers and now the Dean of Students, answers a few questions…
Where did you attend high school and what did you think you wanted to do when you grew up?
“I went to Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. I thought I would do something with numbers like Engineering or Accounting.”
Where did you attend college and what did you do before joining the faculty at HLS?
“I went to Calvin College and got a B.A. in History and Greek. Then went on to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary to get a Masters in Divinity. After that I interned with a church in Massachusetts and did some interim pastor work before coming to HLS.”
Is there a particular moment or memory that stands out for you when you were a student?
“The office hours I spent with Calvin and Gordon-Conwell professors were invaluable to my formation as a teacher today. I try to be a mentor to HLS students the way my professors were to me.”
What attracted you to HLS and what have you learned about yourself after working for this school?
“I was surprised to find a school that would use nearly all the academic skills I had gained over the years. HLS students, faculty and mission all push me to continue pursuing my own learning.”
What do you want HLS parents to know about you? What are your hobbies, interests, passions?
“I have had the opportunity to travel widely. I am always interested in hearing about other parts of the country and world. I read lots of history and enjoy studying and writing about Christianity and culture.”
What would you say to someone considering sending their children to HLS?
“Be sure to shadow a classroom even for only an hour if possible. The dynamic in our classrooms is really something that needs to be witnessed. Our teachers and students are great!”
